Becky Laverty is the third booker to join our panel presentation at MGM Festival Meet Up. At the presentation you’ll meet five international festivals and get insights on festival details, secrets, strategy as bookers and what they are looking for when booking artists.
Meet Becky Laverty, Booker at Roadburn Festival, Tilburg, Holland.
Can you tell us a bit about your festival? And your focus and musical profile?’
Roadburn has been going for 25 years, and over that time it has evolved considerably – from the size, number of days, all the way through to the artistic scope. Roadburn’s focus is on heavy music – in all its forms, regardless of genre. Roadburn has cultivated and maintained a strong community focus around the festival which is the lifeblood of what we do. We seek to galvanise that community, from the underground upwards to celebrate heavy music in myriad ways.
What is your background and how long have you been working with this festival?
I have been a music publicist for over fifteen years and that’s how I got into working at Roadburn – my first job with the festival was press and communications. I have been with Roadburn for ten years this year and my role has changed over that time. I am part of the booking team at Roadburn now and my main tasks are booking artists for the main programme, coordinating and booking the side programme and producing the majority of the writing that you’ll see on the Roadburn website – primarily the artist write ups.
Best show you’ve ever seen hands down? And why was that?
Impossible to choose! At Roadburn some of the most special shows are the ones that have taken such a lot of time and effort to come together – such as Blood Incantation’s Timewave Zero set. But just as meaningful can be performances that I simply never imagined I’d get to see live – Khanate, or Warning playing Watching From A Distance. Outside of Roadburn, I would probably say something I have been to see with my mum, because those are memories of her (and Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen!) that I will always cherish!
